Accelerating the Future of Materials Science.

At the Materials Discovery Research Institute, we harness AI, automation, and advanced chemistry to rapidly discover the materials our world needs most. From clean energy to environmental resilience, our nonprofit lab turns breakthrough science into real-world solutions–fast.

a Safer World.
The MDRI Mission

To discover and deliver breakthrough materials to build a safer, more sustainable future for all.

From energy storage to environment cleanup, the path to a safer, more resilient world runs through material innovation. But traditional discovery is too slow for the urgency we face. At MDRI, we accelerate the design and deployment of novel materials using AI, automation, and high-throughput experimentation, cutting years off development timelines and turning scientific possibility into global impact.

There is no time to waste to solve global challenges.

This is why UL Research Institutes has invested in a new type of lab built on accelerated methods that fuses computational chemistry, AI, robotics, and prototype development.

Computational Chemistry and AI

First principles computational chemistry combined with AI and human expertise provides a powerful way to explore new potential materials to solve global challenges.

Automated Robotic Experimentation and Testing

Automated robotics and testing drastically speeds up real-world experiemtns to test the feasibility of computational approaches. Results are fed back into the computational chemistry and AI to constantly improve.

Prototype Demonstration

Scaling up promising materials into prototypes drastically increases confidence in new materials and time to market. Results here too are fed back into the computational chemistry and AI to constantly improve.

This approach compresses time from inception (TRL 0) to prototypes (TRL 7) to months, not decades.

Research

Research is driven by UL Research Institutes' grand challenges that drive it's mission for a safer, more sustainable future.

Our research targets two of the world's most urgent challenges: developing breakthrough materials for clean energy generation and long-duration storage, and engineering solutions that permanently remove pollutants from air and water.

Eco-Remediation
Novel, commercially relevant materials that selectively and permanently remove GHGs and pollutants from the atmosphere and provide safe, clean water in challenged environments.
